What is a SKU?

SKU stands for Stock Keeping Unit. Typically SKUs are an alphanumeric code that can be made scannable. These numbers are different from UPC and model numbers because you generate SKUs. A SKU is commonly used to identify and track inventory. SKUs can also be used for sales forecasting, and since they make identifying and finding products easy, they can help with customer service.

When tracking SKUs, you should be able  to create unlimited SKUs so that you are never limited in the stock you can keep. You should also be able to have endless custom fields attached to SKUs that allow you to describe your products in detail. Since SKUs describe products, it can also be helpful to have automatic inventory value calculation attached to your SKUs so you can know the price of an individual product, a group of the same products, and your entire inventory.
